Gerber to STEP File Converter: Free Online Tool

So, you’ve finished your PCB layout and exported your Gerber files. Now what? If you’re building a custom enclosure or checking how your board fits into a 3D-printed case, a flat 2D file isn’t going to cut it.

Turn Your PCB Designs into 3D Models in Seconds

That’s where our Gerber to STEP Converter comes in. Learning how to convert Gerber files to STEP format is essential for engineers who need to validate mechanical integration before production. The conversion process transforms industry-standard manufacturing data into three-dimensional representations that enable accurate interference checking and assembly simulation. This capability bridges the gap between PCB layout software and mechanical CAD environments. Effective PCB enclosure fit checking software eliminates costly design iterations by revealing clearance issues before fabrication. By importing your STEP model into mechanical CAD systems, you can perform clash detection between components, connectors, and enclosure walls. This workflow is critical in modern product development where tight integration and miniaturization demand precise spatial planning.

Why Use a STEP File?

  • Check the Fit: Make sure your board actually fits inside your project box before you spend money on manufacturing.
  • Better Visuals: Show off your project! 3D models look way cooler in presentations and portfolios than flat green squares.
  • Mechanical Planning: Easily align mounting holes and cutouts for buttons, screens, and ports.

How to Get Started

Pack Your Files: Gather your Gerber files (like .gtl, .gbl, .drl) into a single .zip folder.

Upload: Drop that zip file into the box above.

Dial in the Details:

Board Thickness: Most standard boards are 1.6mm, but you can change this if you’re going for a thin or extra-thick design.

Copper Weight: This affects how the traces look. 1 oz is the standard for most hobbyist projects.

Format: We recommend STEP AP214 if you want to keep the colors of the silkscreen and solder mask.

Convert & Download: Hit the button, wait a few seconds, and you’re ready to import your 3D board into your favorite CAD tool.

FAQ

Which file format should I choose?

If you just need the shape, AP203 is fine. But if you want your 3D model to look like a real circuit board (with colors for the mask and copper), go with AP214.

Why does my board look blank?

Make sure you included the .drl (drill) file and the silkscreen layers in your zip. Without those, the converter won’t know where the holes and labels go!

Is there a file size limit?

We support files up to 50MB, which is more than enough for almost any standard PCB project.

Does this cost anything?

Nope. It’s a free tool to help you get your hardware projects from the screen to the real world faster.
