PCB Classifications By Layers

Multi-Layer PCB

Three or more conductive layers are laminated together with insulating material to form a multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB). The layers are connected by vias. High-performance electronics such as computers, servers, smartphones, and medical devices depend on this intricate PCB construction.

Single-Sided PCB

The most straightforward and economical type of PCB is the single-sided PCB, which only has a conductive copper layer on one side. It is perfect for low-cost, high-volume applications like remote controls, radios, and calculators that use simple PCB designs.

Double-Sided PCB

On the top and bottom sides of a double-sided PCB are conductive copper layers with circuits connected by vias. It is one of the most popular PCB types and is frequently found in consumer electronics, industrial control systems, and power supplies that require compact PCB layouts.

PCB Classifications By Physical Characteristics

Rigid PCB

A solid, non-flexible substrate material, like FR-4 fiberglass, which offers excellent strength and durability for rigid PCB boards. Throughout its lifecycle, it keeps its shape, providing components with a solid base. Commonly used in computer motherboards as a rigid PCB.

Flexible PCB (FPC)

The foundation of a flexible PCB (FPC) is a pliable substrate such as polyimide. This makes it possible for the flexible PCB board to be folded and bent to fit into confined spaces. Ideal for avionics, wearables, and cameras that need flexible PCB solutions.

Rigid-Flex PCB

Combines rigid circuit sections with integrated flexible circuits in a rigid-flex PCB. This hybrid design improves reliability by eliminating the need for connectors and cables. Found in high-end electronics and military applications that use rigid-flex PCB technology.

PCB Classifications By Substrate Material

FR-4 PCB

The substrate is FR-4, a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate for FR-4 PCB boards. This material provides a good mix of cost-effectiveness, mechanical strength, and electrical insulation. It is the most popular PCB material used in mainstream FR-4 PCB production.

Metal Core PCB (MCPCB)

Usually copper or aluminum based, offering superior heat conductivity for metal core PCB (MCPCB) products. Excellent heat dissipation makes it the best option for LED lighting and power converters to prolong component life with MCPCB technology.

High-Frequency PCB

Uses special materials like Teflon or Rogers with low signal loss for high-frequency PCB boards. It is especially made for high-speed signal transmission used in radar, microwave, and high-speed communication devices that require high-frequency PCB solutions.
