Generally speaking, there are two types of assembly processes:
Surface mount technology (SMT) assembly involves the use of a placement machine and reflow/wave soldering techniques to adhere surface mount components—such as SMD chips, resistors, capacitors, and IC packages—to the PCB surface.
DIP/through-hole assembly: Larger parts or parts that need insertion holes (like ICs and pin-shaped components) are manually or automatically placed into the PCB’s through-holes, then wave soldered or welded.
